Sanctuary for Summer Hosts' Sanity

Embracing the Joys and Challenges of Hosting Along the West Michigan Lakeshore

Hosting family and friends along the beautiful West Michigan Lakeshore can be both incredibly rewarding and uniquely challenging. From logistics and planning to ensuring everyone feels welcome and comfortable, the demands of being the perfect host can sometimes overshadow the joy of the experience. In this blog, we'll share our approach to creating a sanctuary in your lakeshore home that supports seamless hosting, fosters connection, and allows you to enjoy the summer without the stress. Drawing from my personal experiences and professional expertise, I'll share practical tips and my design approach to enhance your home and make your summer hosting truly enjoyable.

A Lifelong Love for West Michigan’s Lakeshore

With roots deeply embedded in the sandy shores of Lake Michigan, my love for the West Michigan Lakeshore has lasted a lifetime. My family invested in their summer home at Silver Lake Sand Dunes in the early '70s. Growing up in a large family, the fifth of six children, accommodations, preparations, and everything in between were always a huge undertaking. But one thing I know for sure: once you experience West Michigan's Lakeshore, you're hooked.

My dad always referred to it as "God's country," and life seemed to take on a whole new pace at the Sand Dunes. Our days were filled with swimming and exploring, laughter and friendship, great meals, and evening fires. Every year brought new faces to join our family or neighbors. Because once you fall in love with Pure Michigan, you secretly want to keep it quaint while sharing it with anyone who means something to you.

Years later, my husband and I decided to make West Michigan—Grand Haven to be exact—our new home. Making Michigan my primary residence in 2023 was an easy decision. As the owner of Tranquil Interiors, with a design philosophy rooted in creating sanctuary and fostering connections, I am delighted to share my professional expertise with homeowners along the lakeshore.

The Challenges of Hosting

We understand the draw and attraction to West Michigan's Lakeshore. From the quaint artistic vibe of Saugatuck to Traverse City, where there's always something happening, our new hometown of Grand Haven continues to woo us with its festivals and beaches. It's easy to love Michigan and desire to share it with friends and family. Whether you live here year-round or simply visit your vacation home or cottage throughout the summer as your busy schedule allows, we relate to the joy it brings and also understand the challenges

Logistics and Planning

Hosting along the lakeshore comes with its own set of logistical challenges: meal plans, sleeping arrangements, and ensuring everyone feels welcome and comfortable. No matter how much space you have, you’ll always make room for one or two more guests. Perhaps you're fortunate enough to have a guest house, or simply an abundance of guest accommodations in the main house. Managing these aspects can be overwhelming, especially when you’re also balancing a busy professional and personal life.

Creating Sanctuary Amidst the Hustle and Bustle

At Tranquil Interiors, we serve our clients by assessing their homes for sanctuary and connection. While communal areas for meals, lounging, and fireside chats are important, so is your ability to take personal sanctuary and refresh. This is potentially your vacation time too. And if you have the luxury of living on the lakeshore year-round, you might find yourself welcoming the end of summer just as eagerly as you greeted its beginning. So how do you protect your sanity while summer hosting along the lakeshore?

1. Personal Sanctuary
First, we review your opportunity for personal sanctuary. This could be a sunroom, outdoor living space, or an extension of your bedroom. We assess and discuss how that space is affected by summer guests. Does it become a space for sleeping, eating, or gathering, leaving you with no place to retreat? Because let’s be brutally honest here: as much as we love sharing our beloved lakeshore and offering memorable experiences to others, it's a lot of effort, hard work, and dirty towels to keep it running. Let us assess your space and create a new sanctuary that withstands the barrage of summer guests.

2. Hosting Challenges
Our interior designer will discuss and review what challenges you experience while hosting. Do you need additional storage features that allow easy access to all your beach day provisions? Stowage for the stacks of shoes piling at the doorway? Are the sleeping arrangements getting out of control as your family grows? Are you dining together or having to spread out among available spaces? No matter what your challenges, we will provide solutions to enhance your experiences while hosting. Your guests will benefit too!

3. Comprehensive Design Plan
Then, we compose a design plan that can range from convertible spaces that support multiple functions throughout the day to developing ways to streamline traffic flow, making the kitchen more functional for the many chefs, and most importantly, preparing your sanctuary to refresh and recharge (and maybe help maintain your sanity).

4. Full-Service Management

In this final step, we fully serve our clients while they tend to their busy careers and active families. At Tranquil Interiors, we handle all the details, from quotes and ordering to installation and styling of the spaces. We collaborate with our vetted craftsmen and preferred vendors to supply our clients with quality finishes and furnishings, providing a top-rate “reveal” experience. Our continued communication and project management take the work and worry from the homeowner, no matter where you spend your days, allowing you to focus on daily priorities while we prepare your sanctuary.

Tips for Hosting Success

Know Your Limits
It's important to embrace how many people you can truly accommodate at once. Boundaries are healthy, and asking Aunt Kathy or her adult children to get an Airbnb close by is totally valid. The more bodies you have in the home, the more beds, showers, towels, and food storage you need. Embrace and honor the limits of your space and your family still living in the home. My introverted husband can only manage hosting for about three nights, which makes for great weekends and a reality we embrace for everyone's sanity and peace. If you have younger children who suffer from overstimulation and the complications of sharing their space or their parents, again, all things to consider when establishing your limits.

Call in the Troops
For your own sanity and the preservation of strength and energy, not to mention the time involved—because face it, you still have a professional and personal life to attend to daily—call in the troops. Who are your troops? We recommend scheduling the housekeeper for additional visits to support getting the house back in order. Call the caterer or your favorite local restaurant to supply a meal on the day of arrival. Personally, there’s nothing worse than having “dinner plans” while an impending arrival is delayed in transit. Keep it simple. We enjoy the artful charcuterie creations of JDub’s, and they will gladly recommend a pairing so you can greet your guests with casual ease and tasty nibbles, without stressing over a meal that is now getting cold.

Reserve Your Right to Not Participate
Grab a selection of brochures from the visitor’s center and adorn your guest accommodations with a variety of activities available to them. I personally get FOMO and want to do all the things but having options for rainy days or when your sunburned shoulders need a break from the beach can support the decision process. Because let's face it, the more people involved, the harder it is to collaborate.  It also grants your guests access to activities that you may not be drawn to personally, allowing them to experience their own sense of adventure and possibly affording you a quiet moment alone in your well-designed sanctuary.

If you’re looking for fun group activities, games, meal planning ideas (I personally love make-your-own pizza night and baked potato bars—bonus: even the pickiest of eaters can have their druthers), or rainy day projects for the kiddos, I suggest Pinterest and Google for ideas. Also plan and delegate with other adults, to share in creating what we hope will be another amazing, memory-filled summer along the Lakeshore of West Michigan.
